3 tips for finding a DJ for a Multicultural Wedding

Do your homework

Your wedding will have a blend of people and unique cultures that will likely not be all together in one space ever again. It’s important that you get it right! Not every DJ can handle the musical and social challenge of 2 different strong cultural backgrounds.

Make sure your DJ has plenty of experience rocking parties for all types of crowds. Ask around, ask questions, research on Instagram and get referrals from wedding professionals.

Provide a list

Even if you hire the most talented, most dialed-in DJ, they’re still going to want to know the deep-cuts, the family jams, and songs that your extended family and friends love.

This list is essential to being able to bridge the cultural gap and build an experience that feels like home to both sides. It will help break down the barriers and allow them to cut loose on the dance floor!

Be Intentional

Guests, especially extended family or old friends you don’t see often, may not know what to expect at your wedding. Be open and intentional: Share your ideas that you want them to know about. Ask large groups coming from out of the country for their musical input.

Be clear with your DJ what you want to get out of the dance party and what your boundaries are. If there are traditions to be included, be sure to mention them so that the moments can be set up and live forever in film and on screen.

Being based in Athens, we work with a lot of passionate Georgia fans. One of the most memorable “extras” is bringing Hairy Dawg himself to the party. He’ll dance, pose for pictures, and hype the crowd.

SO. MUCH. FUN.

Empire Mills - Madison GA

Ok, so this party was amazing. Let’s just get that out of the way. Amberlee and Khaled were an absolute dream to work with. They are everything I love in a couple: Fun, Creative, and Outgoing - when they said that they’d have upwards of 300 guests and many were coming from Puerto Rico, I was PUMPED.

If you want to have a super memorable, intensely fun party, it all starts with how fun YOU are.

We started the reception with Nuevo Grogus, a custom Salsa band that our talented MusicSmiths put together. They played traditional salsa and timba.

After all the formalities, DJ David Osborne took over to DJ for the next few hours. All heck broke loose and the group’s energy was UNLEASHED!

REGGAETON 🔥

Bad Bunny was the crowd favorite. FOR SURE. Some other hot hits were by Ozuna, Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Maluma, and don’t forget Cardi B

They sang EVERY WORD.

Listen to audio from the wedding:

The guests had a special treat: Brazilian Dancers/Drummers - it was AWESOME.

Amberlee and Khaled’s wedding was incredible, so amazing, and so fun, we can’t wait to bring this kind of heat to another couple’s latin-infused wedding.

The First Dance: 2018 in review

We get asked all the time, “What’s the most popular song couples are choosing for their first dance?”. It’s hard to say, since every couple is unique and a first dance choice reflects their style, musical taste, and one-of-a-kind love story. Now that 2018 is nearly at a close, we decided to compile a list. Easily the most popular first dance of 2018 was Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”. Both the solo version and the duet version, featuring Beyonce, racked up a total of 9 plays this year. Aside from Ed, Leon Bridges was exceptionally popular. Three of his hits, “Beyond”, “Here in my arms”, and “Coming Home”, combined for a total of 7 plays. If you look down the list, you’ll see that 3 couples chose “Stand By Me” all by different artists. Is it a coincidence that the top 3 all have a timeless, classic feel to them? Need some ideas for your own wedding, or just want to see what was hot in 2018? Take a look at the list below and listen on the embedded Spotify playlist.

Athens Violinist Chris Gustin!

Stop and watch. Chris is incredible. The unique layering and textures he achieves with a single violin is astounding. Just imagine yourself walking down the aisle with Chris' loop pedal driven arrangements as the soundtrack. Or, bring him to your next networking or industry event as background entertainment. We think he's an awesome addition to cocktail hour and dinner at weddings. Whatever the event, Chris is a great fit!
